Cheesy Crescent Dogs

Ingredients

Dough

  • 250g bread flour (about 2 cups)

  • 1½ cups whole milk (360ml), warm

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (28g), softened

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (15ml)

  • ½ tablespoon active dry yeast (4–5g)

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (12g)

Filling

  • 8 hot dogs

  • 8 slices mozzarella cheese, or 1 cup (115g) shredded mozzarella

For Brushing

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

  • 1 egg yolk, beaten (optional, for a shinier finish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.

Add the flour, softened butter, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead for 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Divide the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and divide it into 8 equal portions.

Shape each portion into a ball and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Shape the Crescent Dogs

Roll each dough ball into a long triangle shape.

Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on the wide end of the triangle and place a hot dog on top.

Roll the dough tightly around the cheese and hot dog, starting from the wide end and working toward the tip.

Place the rolls seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking tray.

Step 4: Proof

Cover the tray and let the dough rise for 25 minutes until slightly puffy.

Step 5: Bake

Preheat the oven to 380°F (193°C).

Brush the tops with beaten egg yolk for a golden finish, or melted butter for a softer crust.

Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the crescent dogs are golden brown.

Step 6: Finish

Remove from the oven and brush lightly with melted butter while still warm.

Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Baker's Notes

  • Mozzarella provides the best cheese pull, but cheddar, provolone, or a cheese blend also work well.

  • Make sure the cheese is completely wrapped inside the dough to prevent leaking during baking.

  • These are delicious served with ketchup, mustard, ranch, or spicy mayo.

  • For a bakery-style appearance, sprinkle sesame seeds on top before baking.
